Are pawn shops regulated?

Yes. Geauga Pawn and Alliance Loan Company are licensed and regulated by the Ohio Department of Commerce in the Division of Financial Institutions (DFI) under the Ohio Pawnbroker Act (Title XLVII, Chapter 4727). Our license number is pb.100167.000.

What do I need to bring with me?

Customers who are pawning or selling should come prepared with a valid, government-issued photo ID.

How do loans work at a pawnshop?

To receive a pawn loan, you must fulfill the following criteria:

Be at least 18 years old
Present a government-issued photo ID
Possess an item of value

Our staff will consider the item’s current value and resale condition, among other factors, and then make you an offer. Additional fees may apply, including:

Monthly interest fee
Monthly storage fee
Mailed reminder fee (if no payment is received after 3 months)

How long do I have to get my item out of pawn?

Items can remain with us as long as you need with timely interest payments. Customers can shorten the duration of their pawn loan with full payment. The loan can even be redeemed the day of issuance – no minimum holding period is required.

Are there a lot of stolen items that come through the store?

No. Less than 1/10 of 1% of transactions involve stolen property. While this can happen – as with any institution trading material goods – our staff is trained to recognize high-risk circumstances, and we have protocols in place to avoid taking stolen property. We are also required by law to submit a daily listing of all items received to local police.

What happens if I don’t return to claim my item in pawn?

If we haven’t received a loan payment from you after three months, you’ll receive a reminder in the mail from our staff. After four months with no payment, your item will be pulled from storage and added to the store’s inventory to be sold.

We understand that not everyone will be able to repay their loan. Failure to pay off a pawn loan will not negatively impact your credit score or ability to receive another short-term loan from Geauga Pawn and Alliance Loan Company in the future.

Are there limitations on the dollar amounts or quantity of loans?

No. We accept a variety of items as collateral. Customers can come back repeatedly to receive additional short-term loans from Geauga Pawn and Alliance Loan Company.

What items can I buy, sell, or pawn in your store?

How is the value of an item determined for pawning and selling?

Each item is individually assessed and its value is subjective. When we consider an item for loan or purchase, we must consider our ability to resell the item in our market position.

What if I’m not happy with the price offered?

Our customers are under no obligation to accept an offer from Geauga Pawn and Alliance Loan Company. If we cannot agree on a price for a particular item, we would be happy to evaluate other goods you may have the next time you stop by our stores.

Can I come back at a later date to try and sell the same item again?

Yes, absolutely. Each time you bring in an item, our staff performs a new evaluation. Any previous offers you’ve received from us are disregarded.
